ABSTRACT

Managerial effectiveness is a crucial element in the running of any business and this concept can be defined as 'the extent to which a manager achieves intended objectives'. In order to manage a general practice (GP) you will require a number of management skills, many of them related to man-management. The patients have the right to a good level of service from their GP surgery and the GPs themselves deserve an adequate level of remuneration for providing such a service. This chapter addresses the issues relating to cashflow projections, spreadsheets, bank reconciliations, reimbursements, budgeting and stock control and concentrates solely on the management of people and systems. However, all the replies offer solutions to management problems directly relating to, and experienced in, general practice. The specific problems experienced by those managers who have worked in the practice before in a different capacity and are trying to adjust to their new role will also be touched on.
