ABSTRACT

You can go on about physician education as long as you like, but if you really want to grab their attention you have to go for their pocketbooks.

This chapter starts with consideration of the role that reimbursement mechanisms play in determining and influencing provider behaviour within managed care programmes and the various options available to payers in setting up forms of payment. Some time is spent detailing these various approaches, before considering some key transatlantic issues, in particular capitation-based funding and the future of the NHS fundholding initiative/GP commissioning.
