ABSTRACT

The use of complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) has become immensely popular. Side-effects are a particularly important issue for pregnant and lactating women. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy. It is based on the belief that two vital sources of ‘energy’ control our body – Yin and Yang. More and more women are in favour of ‘natural’ childbirth, hoping that this means a minimum of drugs. The evidence on whether or not it helps specifically for pain in childbirth is not totally convincing but at least in part encouraging. Professional orthodox care should be on stand-by in case acupuncture fails, and the acupuncturist should be well trained and experienced. Back pain is a very common problem in pregnancy and acupuncture can be an effective remedy. Pain and dizziness are common transient problems after acupuncture. Pregnancy can be a stressful time and relaxation greatly sought after. Many complementary therapies offer easy access to relaxation.
