ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how to change the agenda of the adolescent and family from pain control to restoration of a fulfilling life. It looks at what motivates change. The chapter suggests a cost/benefit discussion and shows how to access the adolescent's values and goals as primary motivators. It is important to addresses what has already changed for the adolescent and family since the presence of persistent pain. Some adolescents have not wanted to contemplate this overview of their situation, because they will feel sad or a failure. After first clarifying that the adolescent understands the concept of a value, draw up a picture or diagram of how they would like others to describe them. Values are what give meaning to a person's life. Values are essentially neutral, neither right nor wrong: they simple 'are'. If the concept of values is too difficult, a hierarchy of goals can be constructed in terms of 'be' goals.
