‘Going to the loo, doing a poo, passing a motion, opening one's bowels, defecating’ – we all do it, but discussing anything connected with bodily waste is one of society's taboos. Grannie used to clutch me close with her claw-like hand and whisper, “Have you had your bowels open?” My own generation's attitude is hardly less inhibited.
