ABSTRACT
Introduction Modernising Medical Careers1 (MMC) introduced a new training programme (a foundation programme) starting in August 2005 for the first two years of a doctor's postgraduate training. A run-through programme of specialty training starting in August 2007, which for general practice takes three years, follows this. In addition there may be the opportunity to undertake two years of in-service higher professional education (HPE) on completion of specialty general practice training. MMC has created the opportunity to improve general practice training, making it more flexible and competency-based.
