ABSTRACT

Introduction Organisational policies often afford ill and disabled people priority considera tion when they ask to work and train flexibly. Despite this positive approach by educational managers and employers, the day-to-day handling of requests can be unsatisfactory on both sides. Barriers, both organisational and attitudinal, which exist towards flexible training are compounded with concerns raised by ill health and disability. Concerns may legitimately raise patient safety and health and safety risks but fail to take into account other legal responsibilities. A solution-focused approach is required.
