ABSTRACT

Many other recommendations, which are too numerous to list separately, exist to regulate the standards of various clinical environments. These govern aspects of the facilities such as the amount of space required, cleaning and infection control, the supply of utilities such as electricity and water, and the manufacturing standards of equipment. For example, an environment in which anaesthetic gases (e.g. nitrous oxide) are used must have an active gas-scavenging system in place, as Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) recommendations govern the amount of contamination of the atmosphere by anaesthetic gases that is allowable.23 These factors are not the direct responsibility of the sedationist, but the practitioner must be aware of their implications.
