ABSTRACT

The practice of sedation on the ICU is similar to the practice ● of total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA). This may be used in combination with other oral sedatives. The patient’s analgesic requirements must be met. The administration of muscle relaxants may be necessary, but these drugs should be used with caution. The sedation should be prescribed by doctors and managed by ● nurses according to a local guideline, incorporating a targeted sedation score. Sedation scores or sedation breaks are a necessary part of ● the treatment plan to reduce the incidence of over-sedation, prolonged stays and sedation-related complications. Prolonged use of sedation can have adverse side-effects. ●
