ABSTRACT

Against the background of the fast progress in labour, it is unlikely that there is a malpresentation (brow, face, breech or shoulder presentation) or malposition (occipito-posterior or occipitotransverse position). The most likely finding on vaginal examination will be that of a vertex presentation in an occipito-anterior position. In this position, the fetal occiput (identified by the posterior fontanelle and lambdoid stutures) can be palpated anteriorly under the maternal symphysis pubis.
