ABSTRACT

Some insights into funding research Funding bodies may be local, regional, national or international in scope. They fund research in two basic ways - by way of either: • a contract to undertake a specific piece of research that is

requested by the funding body; or • an open competition in a field of research for which the funding

body has a specific remit.1 Those judging your bid should understand what constitutes high-

quality research or the equivalent if funding other types of posts, projects or service developments. They should be familiar with the type of methodology that is most likely to answer the purpose they have expressed in their award details. Different types of question will require different kinds of evidence to answer them. In each case the assessors will rate the risks that a chosen methodology or particular bidding organisation can provide irrefutable evidence to answer that question.
