ABSTRACT

Case 16.1: chemical exposure A man of 57 with acute non-lymphocytic leukaemia (ANLL) is working in a small firm for the finishing of metals (electroplating, painting, etc.). He has worked in the firm since he was around 25 years of age. The work environment is rather complex, and has varied over the years. He has been exposed to strong acids and some solvents, such as xylene and trichloroethylene, but there is no current obvious heavy exposure to benzene. Although benzene might have been present in the workplace in small amounts several years ago, the information is uncertain. He has been treated successfully, and his disease is now in remission. He is now back at work and is consulting occupational health services to discuss his job. He is tired, and the employer would like to be sure he is not exposed to anything that may further impair his health.
