ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses the relationship between poverty and child health from a range of sources, national, international and historical. The evidence confirms that poverty and low socio-economic status have been linked with child health in all settings and all historical periods. The book summarizes evidence for the role of social change and improvements in living standards in the dramatic improvements in health in the developed countries since the beginning of the 20th century. It also summarizes that there is a global and historical continuity linking poverty and child health. Child health workers who are committed to improving the health of all children can play an important role by supporting poor families and their children and working in areas where their individual contribution directly alleviates the health consequences of poverty.
