ABSTRACT

The general practice registrar year has become busier in recent times. Passing summative assessment is now a requirement for becoming a fully qualified general practitioner, and you need to produce an audit project, prepare a video, sit a multiple-choice test and obtain a satisfactory trainer’s report. Some registrars also decide to sit the MRCGP examination as well at the end of the registrar year, which may put an additional strain on them for a number of months. However, this is not as bad as it sounds. Most registrars manage all o f this and still have time to enjoy themselves, although to be able to juggle all o f the different assessments, it is very important to plan the year ahead. Try and sit down with your trainer early on and look at the official deadlines for the various assessments. For example, instead of leaving everything until the end, you may try to finish assignments such as the summative assessment multiple-choice question (MCQ) paper or the audit project at an early stage in order to leave more time for the video. By setting some personal deadlines, you may feel more in control, which can help you to monitor whether everything is running according to plan. However, this chapter is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to any of the examinations, but rather it attempts to look at some problem areas that may be worth considering.
