ABSTRACT

The main aim of the retainer scheme is to keep GPs in touch with medical practice while they are taking a career break. You may find posts by approaching local postgraduate departments or contacting practices directly. Working as a retainee enables you to work for a limited number of sessions and to attend postgraduate teaching. You will be able to join the NHS pension scheme and can usually negotiate a contract with your employing practice. Practices participating in the retainer scheme need to be approved by the various regions and should reach the standard of a training practice.
