ABSTRACT

Rehabilitation in occupational health terms simply means getting the worker back to work in a job that is appropriate to their medical condition - by temporary or permanent redeployment, or by specific redesign of the job. Communication between the employer or occupational health service and the general practitioner (GP) is of great help. An appreciation of the role of occupational health services and other agencies in resettlement and rehabilitation is very important for the general practitioner and practice nurse. GPs are likely to receive such requests for information from time to time, and their reports to help the occupational health service to advise management, bearing in mind the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act. The Disability Discrimination Act (1995) makes it illegal for employers of 15 or more staff to discriminate against people with disabilities when selecting, training or promoting employees.
