ABSTRACT

Educational evaluation is a systematic approach to collection, analysis and interpretation of information about any aspect of conceptualisation, design, implementation and utility of educational programmes. Evaluation measures the teaching. Evaluation can concentrate on the effectiveness of a completed programme, when it is sometimes called ‘product’ or ‘summative’ evaluation and often carried out by independent observers. Evaluation is a vital component of the educational process. Kirkpatrick has described a hierarchy of evaluation, or four levels on which to focus our questions, and these have been adapted for use in health education. The commonest and quickest form of evaluation is to ask for participant feedback. An evaluation should be valid, reliable, simple, and practical, and probably anonymous. Evaluation by others not involved as learners in the teaching process is an important way to make revisions and modifications to programme but also enables to determine effectiveness, increase accountability and assist in decision making.
