ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the second major group of birthweight determinants - social and environmental factors. As in the preceding chapter, evidence for the impact of these factors on the whole of the birthweight distribution will be reviewed as well as their effects on preterm birth and the lower extreme of the birthweight distribution.
