ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the life of Mark, a fictitious drug user. Mark has overdosed. The people he was with had fortunately received training in overdose prevention and recognised the signs. The overdose leads to Mark being admitted to a local hospital, where he is given specialist care. Phil seeks to engage with Mark, offering him harm reduction information and seeks to establish an informal connection. Phil had learned that Mark had discharged himself when he came in to work. He had tried calling Mark but had not been able to get through. Mark arrived for his assessment. Mark misses his appointment having used at the end of the weekend and over the period when his appointment was booked. Issues related to anger have emerged and he is offered structured therapeutic counselling, which he accepts. He also agrees to vocational training. He continues being prescribed methadone.
