ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some specific techniques for exploring and creating narratives. These techniques are ways of putting into action. Although the techniques all derive from family therapy, they are presented in a way that results from being honed down over several years, in order to address the needs of people working in primary care. There are some specific consulting techniques that can often help patients to develop helpful new stories. These techniques can be learned and practised. Some of these techniques involve asking questions in particularly creative or imaginative ways. Others involve taking a stance that passes power over to the patient. One of the most important aspects of narrative technique is a constant process of reflection on what is happening in the conversation. This in turn can lead to more effective questions and comments. The chapter discusses techniques such as exploring differences and connections, hypothesizing, circular questioning, strategizing, sharing power, reflection, and finding a good new story.
