ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the discipline of performance analysis and concept of game style assessment. It outlines the approach of selection and measurement of performance variables and how to generate game style plots. The system of analyzing game style is based on dissecting the game into discrete moments of play using the previously described general principles of play in field-based invasion sports. The quantification of descriptive variables, through the use of performance analysis techniques, that fall within each of the moments of play then form the basis for the measurement of game style. There are numerous practical applications for a team in identifying and quantifying game style within field-based sports. Player development, team cohesion, training prescription, and formulation of game plans to optimize performance are a few examples. The chapter suggests that some laboratory experiences to determine performance variables to use in game style plots, and to collect game statistics to generate a game style plot.
