ABSTRACT

Richard May co-founded the Baltimore Innovation Village with exactly the purpose of engaging the majority of city residents in mind. Innovation Village Baltimore works on engaging disadvantaged communities in those drivers that will define the future of work. The start-up culture nurtured by the Baltimore Innovation Village is not asking for large government programs to lift poor communities, but aims at the entrepreneurial spirit of young unemployed people to use their skills by providing the services that are needed in their communities in new and creative ways. Traditional workforce development tries to connect undereducated individuals with low-paying jobs, which are often outside of the community where people live and for businesses that don't invest in the community and often offer jobs that have no future. The biggest benefit of the Uber transportation model is not the ease of use for riders, but the ease with which people with a car can leverage that possession to make money.
