ABSTRACT

This chapter covers my study of day-to-day practice in three different social work teams to identify the necessary supporting factors for effective practice. The three social work teams were comparable in size and geography, all working with adults, but in differing circumstances. There was a District Team for younger adults (aged 19-64); a Hospital Team under pressure to facilitate discharges in the same borough; and a Mental Health Team in a different borough. The principal officer, Dawn, managed the first two teams. The specialist Mental Health Team worked with the homeless mentally ill. The field work was completed in 12 months, with a total of 44 visits and 37 interviews across the three teams.
