ABSTRACT

Social workers try to help service users – often with damaged personalities due to adverse life experience – with material resources and relationships. Innovative thinking is as important in social work as in other challenging professions, whether psychiatry or engineering. Another mind can offer significant benefit through therapeutic discussion or supervision, providing the mental space to reflect and think creatively to disentangle complex emotions such as fear, sadness or anger. This process enables the social worker and client to reach a clearer view on the best way forward.
