ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a variety of fascinating databases relevant to bioinformatics research. Shortly after the relational database was first introduced by E. F. Codd in 1970 [82], bioinformatics databases began to be established and made publicly available to researchers. Digitized biological information has been doubling every 12 to 18 months for years. Today’s biomedical researchers are fortunate to have such an abundance of quality literature and information at their fingertips. Among the challenges for bioinformatics researchers (i.e., bioinformaticians), however, is trying to keep this deluge in some kind of order. Relevant databases are presented here and categorized as aids in understanding the resources that are available to researchers today.
