ABSTRACT

Intellectuals, public-spirited persons and think tanks all over the world are seriously concerned with the existing model of economic development and have come out with alternatives to create a sustainable and egalitarian society, based on respect for nature, universal human rights and economic and social justice. This chapter discusses the views of some of the leading think tanks. The Club of Rome study points out that the exponential growth of population and industrial production is built into the self-generating structure of the global economy. UNDP's Human Development Report has been emphasizing that development is primarily and fundamentally about people. Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) adjusts a nation's personal expenditure upward to account for the benefits of non-market activities. A new matrix of economic development is developed, in which progress is measured in terms of development of human capability, dignified employment for everyone, equitable distribution of income and wealth and ecological sustainability and social well-being of the community.
