ABSTRACT

Upon completion of Chapter 6, readers will be able to explain the interactive balance between listening and speaking in conversations. They will be able to explain Grice’s maxims of conversation and the concept of co-creation and be able to distinguish conversation from talk, identify individual differences that affect the quality of a conversation, and discuss the impact of context and relationship on conversations. Knowledge of these concepts will enable students to select listening strategies that will make them a partner in conversation and be understanding of those who may not be a good conversationalist.
