ABSTRACT

Parents usually place high expectations on their pregnancy journey and having a successful birth. From the beginning of the desire to be parents, the idea of a 'normal' and 'healthy' pregnancy starts arising in the thoughts, in the heart and in the soul of the parents. Spirituality is broader than religiosity, and nurses should be aware of this when assessing parents' spirituality and when providing spiritual care. Being religious or not, nurses can transform their presence into a healing presence, and this means that parents may feel the nurses' empathy, compassion and commitment in transforming suffering in meaningful moments in their lives. A child should represent the joy and meaning making of a new life. Sometimes the child is born earlier or unwell, and parents may be driven into a suffering situation and the loss of a child, widely known as the worst pain.
