ABSTRACT

Educational potential of social media is much political. So, what does it mean to think about the ‘political’ of social media’s educational use? As we know, India is impregnated with different social hierarchy, where access to education is taxing for underprivileged people. Social media is a natural choice for millions of people who do not have access to high-quality education and knowledge due to various historical reasons. Here, social media does not have hierarchy! Then, the question is what role social media could play in the educational scenario in India? This enquiry explores what extent social media could create Education 2.0 in the contemporary social media landscape in India. Social media holds political significance in the traditional Indian social structure that restrains education for all for various reasons, be it access, quality and equity. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Blogger, WordPress and LinkedIn, in particular, have greater usage in educational scenario. Social media could configure social learning in the rigid and hierarchical social structure in India that impedes the prospects of education among poorest people and minority communities, and this is the trajectory of political significance of social learning. Social media rejuvenates higher education in the days ahead and has the potential to pass across the factors that have been traditionally a hindrance to the educational attainment of masses in the context of deep-rooted social hierarchy in India.
