ABSTRACT

Atopic diseases arise from aberrant immune responses to environmental allergens (Stone 2003). The atopic diseases of childhood consist of atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and allergic asthma. The Mediterranean diet has been found to protect against the development of asthma (Nagel et al. 2010, Chatzi and Kogevinas 2009) and atopy in children (Chatzi and Kogevinas 2009). However, epidemiological evidence regarding the association between the intake of dairy foods and allergic disorders has been inconsistent (Miyake et al. 2012). This chapter discusses a few studies that have been carried out in humans regarding the effect of yogurt on atopic diseases.
