ABSTRACT

The creation of support letters for transgender individuals' identity documentation and safe passage is a critical component of transgender affirmative care and an important professional competency. The creation of supportive letters can be a time consuming but crucial task. Most effectively create supportive documentation; a provider can create templates for each type of letter that are adapted to the requirements in the health care professional's specific geographic region. Most electronic health records allow providers to save letter templates that can be auto-populated with client information. The authors discuss three main types of non-surgical documentation that providers will likely encounter on a regular basis: federal or national documentation, which includes requests to alter the gender marker on a person's passport or social security card ; state documentation, which includes requests to alter the gender marker on a person's birth certificate and driver's license, and for name change; and safe passage letters.
