ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidelines for locating relevant, reliable resources, and for connecting with professional peers. The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) was incorporated in 1979 and was originally named the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association in honor of Harry Benjamin, MD, one of the first physicians to work with transgender clients. Mental health professionals who work with transgender clients are strongly encouraged by the WPATH Standards of Care to develop professional peer networks within which they can discuss complex cases, share information about the field, and increase their exposure to the variety and patterns of experience and expression they may observe throughout the transgender community. WPATH provides the premier networking private email lists in the field of transgender health — both regional and international — where members can ask any question and can be assured that they will be answered in a helpful way.
