ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that a conceptualization and treatment approach for gender-related distress and associated mental health problems in transgender clients. It discusses high-risk conditions that affect hormone therapy as well as strategies for mitigating risk, keeping the non-prescribing mental health professional in mind. The chapter provides recommendations for targeting specific risk factors that may interfere with effective treatment for gender dysphoria, particularly hormone therapy. Transgender people experience higher rates of mental health problems including depression, substance use, and suicidality, as well as increased rates of exposure to trauma compared to cisgender people. Mental health professionals working with transgender clients are likely to be most effective and feel most supported if working within an interdisciplinary team. Equally important is the mental health provider's role as teacher and coach for new skill development, so a transgender client can interact more effectively with medical providers, and at work and in social settings.
