ABSTRACT

In order to operationalize the core question of the essay, Chapter 1 sets up a specific jury device. A specific institutional proposal for ‘escaping modus vivendi’ is successful if it passes the ‘representatives of comprehensive doctrines’-test or RoCD Test for short (see Section 1.3). A proposal for fixing our current modus vivendi will pass the RoCD Test if the representatives of comprehensive doctrines (democrats, socialists, libertarians, conservatives, feminists, etc.) are convinced that a given proposal is at least a Pareto improvement over the current modus vivendi arrangements. The chapter moreover spells out the core notions of ‘modus vivendi’ and ‘modus vivendi arrangements.’ Furthermore, a novel taxonomy of political disagreement that distinguishes between lazy, shallow and deep disagreement is presented (see Section 1.2).
