ABSTRACT

This chapter works through Phase B, which addresses particular, individual, caregiver emotional issues grounded in their own unresolved childhood trauma—as these adult concerns typically are. In Phase B, the selected caregiver participates in up to eight individualized sessions. The sessions are typically scheduled once weekly, allowing caregivers adequate time and energy for processing, integrating and applying the material learned and completing homework. During each session, the clinician and client work together to produce the most accurate yet simple diagrammatic representation of one specific aspect of the client’s primary treatment goal. This jointly-created diagram is copied and taken home as proof of the client’s growing competency, autonomy and ability to self-determine. The session’s diagram is attached to a charting schedule that includes every day of the week. Diagrams and charting track the unique processing and action-taking ability of the client—which guides the clinician to the client’s individually-tailored next steps in treatment.
