ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how Phase C, the ITTM’s culminating stage, shifts the focus from the caregiver to the child, who is the true center of the treatment process. The caregiver nonetheless remains very much involved, acting as co-therapist. Phase C consists of four assessment sessions and four treatment sessions with child and caregiver both present. The assessment determines the treatment that follows in the remaining four sessions. The remaining four sessions further explore issues while establishing a contained affective, cognitive, and behavioral experience for the child. Just as the caregiver received support to make positive changes in their own life, the caregiver is now positioned as an emotionally attuned and supportive, competent, most-informed director for the child in treatment.
