ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the educators' responses to a questionnaire sheds light on a number of issues on the purposes of educating Latino youth. It provides a basis for comparing the views of educators with the views of students. Most mainstream educators who responded to the questionnaire highlighted language as the main issue facing Latino students. Most educators, regardless of their ethnic background, felt that schools were not truly meeting the challenge of effectively helping Latino students academically. Educators across ethnic lines equated success with education. Although acknowledging that racism and discrimination are strong factors affecting Latino students, Anglo educators tended to attribute negative pathologies to the students and their communities, blaming the students for the failures they experienced in school. One of the more interesting patterns was the educators' responses to Latino studies and who should teach it. Latino educators associated role models as a need in the school and in the teaching force.
