ABSTRACT
What is cultural competency? The matter of culture and child protection in Western and culturally diverse communities is evidently complex. However, putting the detail into practice requires professional skill, commonly referred to as ‘cultural competency’. It is often used interchangeably with ‘cultural sensitivity’ when intended to indicate an appreciation for the importance of culture in child protection work and for ethnic minorities, and subsumes ‘cultural awareness’.
