ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises the key findings and discusses their potential policy implications for agriculture development in India. Results are synthesised and thematically presented to redress the challenges of globalisation, liberalisation and deregulation. Agriculture growth and productivity show significant regional variability in India. The annual average growth of the agricultural sector was recorded much lower at 3 per cent relative to other sectors despite the growing diversification of agricultural practices and infrastructure. Spatial variability in land and labour productivity was measured and visualised across different agriculture regions in India. The policy debate on regional economic development was rejuvenated to revisit its policy relevance in a globalised and competitive world. Economic liberalisation and regulatory reforms in India have shaped the agriculture production landscape. Inter-regional differences in land and labour productivity in India is an inherent effect of the physiographical characteristics and agro-climatic conditions.
