ABSTRACT

One example of a planned environment that strives to reduce risks comes from physical structures such as dams or levees. In the United States, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers typically takes responsibility for the creation of major projects to increase safety from ooding. Across the nation, thousands of such structures-large, small, and even makeshi—exist. Oen, local and state governments shoulder responsibility for dam and levee maintenance while citizens have responsibility for dams on private land.
