ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the impact of context on all aspects of practice with individuals. It examines generalist practice competencies and behaviors that support client strengths within their environments, as well as the variety of social work roles and methods that support client–worker relationships, including strengths-, narrative-, and solution-focused approaches. The chapter provides case examples to help students bridge the gaps between strengths-based, environmental, social justice, human rights, and social construction perspectives. It discusses the termination and evaluation and follow-up of the planned change intervention and focuses on strengths-based strategies to help the client maintain accomplished goals. The chapter addresses the process of ending a professional relationship with students clients and the ways in which the social worker and client can continue to build on the strengths that the client brought to the relationship and developed during the intervention. It also explores strategies for evaluating the practice intervention on multiple levels.
