ABSTRACT

In one of these slipper-makers' places about half the men were Irish Catholics and the other half Russian Jews. The master spoke very imperfect English, but still one could understand him fairly well. He quite willingly showed us his wages book, in which we could see how much each of his men had earned each week. He paid his men by piece work, and the weekly wages depended on their skill and industry. None were getting starvation wages. The slippers were nicely finished and were meant for evening wear. The price per pair seemed low, but then each man could make so many in a week he got quite good wages.
