ABSTRACT
ten special prizes of 5s. each for the best vegetable gardens, and 150 entries competed for the Irish Peasantry Society's forty prizes of 5s. each, for removing the ubiquitous manure J?it to a sanitary distance from the cottage, and replacmg it by a garden. About four hundred of these gardens are now to be found round Foxford; and as the premiums can only be claimed once, the work of transformation still goes on, and flowers and vegetables are gradulLlly taking the place of the former objectionable malodorous deposit. In the technical schools carpentry and other useful trades were taught to the boys, and spinning, knitting, sewing, and, above all, patching and mending to the girls, many of whom showed their efficiency last week when the prizes were awarded for the best mended garments, &c."
