ABSTRACT
A LONDON middle class suburb of the less wealthy kind, composed chiefly of streets of small houses, the heads of which have their occupations in town, leaving, during the day time, a community almost entirely of women and children, is often sadly wanting in a common point of interest. The chief link binding the residents one with another is the universlLl anxiety to make ~ix!lence d? the work of a .shil~ng, and .too often, the prmCIpal topIC of conversatIOn IS the mIsdeeds of their respective maidservants. To bring broader ideas to such an aggregation of atoms, to make a centre of interest in dull and narrow lives., is to tum a population into a community, existence into life.
