ABSTRACT

Geographical thinking and reasoning occurs when a child is fully engaged with geographical investigations such as conducting a traffic survey or assessing the tourism potential in their local area. Each investigation involves the use of geographical skills such as observation, mapping and making connections. The most successful investigations and enquiries are those of interest to children, shaped by children and framed by children’s questions. The development of thinking and problem-solving skills is essential, considering children will have to deal with future geographical problems that we cannot conceive right now. Thinking geographically is not the same as everyday thinking. Geographical thinking involves making connections between local and global, human and physical, near and far, time and distance, and so on.
