ABSTRACT

The emergence of a postmodern society, with its many unresolved economic, technological, moral and ecological problems, is a global phenomenon. There is widespread consensus that the model of development promoted through globalisation and capitalism is unsustainable. Systems of industrial and technological development will have to be reimagined and recreated in ways that do not rely on non-renewable resources, coming to use natural resources in sustainable ways that do not cause harm to people or the natural world. The need to understand the challenges facing the Earth has never been greater. Growing up in a globalised world requires new approaches to education which develop a global dimension, a futures perspective, and 21st-century competencies. Global learning involves developing an understanding of contemporary issues, local/global links and power relations.
