Introduction
In this chapter, we review one of the latest trends in public safety: body-worn cameras. Law enforcement officers contact the public on a daily basis and body-worn cameras can help promote legitimacy and public support for a very difficult job. The use of bodyworn cameras can increase accountability and ensure that the public has confidence in law enforcement. This chapter addresses the advantages and disadvantages of using body-worn camera technology. We also review the history of body-worn cameras and various legal considerations, including privacy concerns and the improper use of video footage. Finally,
this chapter includes a comprehensive list of recommendations for law enforcement personnel to review before implementing a body-worn camera program.
