ABSTRACT

There are three key autoethnographic ideas that need to be considered when attempting to construct and articulate ethical guidelines for this methodology. These ideas come from my reading of and reflections on a large number of autoethnographic studies. In brief, the ideas are clustered around concepts of ‘story’ and can be expressed as

• The creation and dissemination of story (including the importance of telling one’s stories, the recognition that one’s stories are never created completely in isolation and the possibility that other people in the story may contribute directly to this creation).
