ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the issues with interpersonal relationships (intimate relationships, family relationships and friendships) that may arise following bariatric surgery. Whilst the positive consequences of bariatric surgery can bring people closer together, it can also create ripples as the dynamics in relationships may change. Partners (or others) may try to sabotage weight loss as an attempt to maintain the status quo in relationships. This chapter includes strategies to assist working through these issues. It also includes sections on sexual functioning after bariatric surgery and ways of building up confidence to meet potential partners.
