ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on developing an informed and realistic view of the behaviour changes required in order to achieve long-term weight loss following bariatric surgery. It reviews and dispels some of the common myths associated with bariatric surgery. It also outlines the ways in which bariatric surgery is different to people’s previous yo-yo dieting experiences. The chapter raises awareness of some of the psychological issues before and after surgery that affect outcomes and helps people to assess whether bariatric surgery is the right option for them and whether this is the right time.
